SHOULD YOU GET THE COVID-19 VACCINE?

08/09/2021

The answer to this question in the light of current scientific data is “YES, Covid-19 vaccine should be taken”.

There are multiple explanations for this;

Covid-19 is a deadly disease. Although most patients recover without causing any major problems, the mortality rate of patients with Covid 19 who are treated in hospital is much higher than the mortality rate of seasonal influenza patients who are treated in hospital.

Seasonal influenza virus can cause a severe clinical picture, especially in the elderly and patients with chronic diseases. Sars-Cov-2 virus can also cause a severe clinical picture in the elderly and those with chronic diseases. In addition, Sars-Cov-2 virus can cause a severe clinical picture in all age groups, although it is less seen in children and young people.

Primary viral pneumonia (pneumonia caused by the virus itself) is less common in seasonal flu, most of the pneumonias seen are secondary bacterial pneumonias. Secondary bacterial pneumonias can be treated with antibiotics. Covid-19 pneumonia is much more common than pneumonia caused by the seasonal flu virus. Furthermore, Covid-19 pneumonia is a primary viral pneumonia, that is, the Sars-Cov-2 virus itself causes pneumonia. Covid-19 pneumonia cannot be treated with antibiotics, there is no definitive treatment for Covid-19 pneumonia except supportive treatments.

Coagulation events are more common in Covid-19 pneumonia than in other pneumonias. This may also contribute worsening of the Covid-19 pneumonia.

Most patients with Covid-19 pneumonia recover without causing any major problems. When compared to all individuals with Covid 19, the ratio of severe Covid-19 patients is less, but because the Sars-Cov-2 virus spreads very quickly, total number of severe Covid-19 patients can be high. The increase in the number of severe Covid-19 patients due to the rapid spread of the Sars-Cov-2 virus has the potential to force the capacities of the intensive care units of hospitals.

Covid-19 can be exist without symptoms or with mild symptoms in a significant number of individuals. Although these individuals have a mild Covid-19 infection, they can transmit the Sars-Cov-2 virus to other individuals around them, who are elderly, have chronic diseases and have the potential to have severe Covid-19. There is no clear data that Covid-19 vaccines reduce disease transmission. Many vaccines that prevent diseases also reduce disease transmission. It is expected that this situation may be valid for the current Covid-19 vaccines.

A Covid-19 vaccine that induces a strong immunity can also have a protective effect against many variants of the Sars-Cov-2 virus which shows frequent mutations.

When evaluated in the light of current scientific data, it is seen that having a Covid-19 vaccine that induces a strong immunity is very important in terms of both protecting individual health and protecting public health.

Pandemics cannot be prevented by treatment in hospitals, pandemics are prevented by vaccination and other prevention methods.
